Mamata Banerjee

Incumbent West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking re-election from Bhabanipur, which goes to the polls in the second phase on April 29.
A constituency marked by its mix of middle-class, upper middle-class and traditional Bengali neighbourhoods, Bhabanipur has historically rewarded personal outreach over high-decibel campaigning. Reflecting this, Banerjee has focused on direct engagement, particularly with apartment residents often beyond the reach of street-corner rallies.
The seat has become one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 Assembly elections, with Banerjee — a three-term MLA from Bhabanipur — facing a direct challenge from Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.
The contest carries added significance as a rematch of the Nandigram battle in 2021, where Adhikari defeated Banerjee after defecting from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP.
Banerjee first contested Bhabanipur in 2011, the year she brought an end to the Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state. A decade later, following her defeat in Nandigram, it was Bhabanipur that facilitated her return to the Assembly through a bypoll.
In 2016, she defeated senior Congress leader Deepa Dasmunsi in a contest dubbed the “battle between Didi and Boudi”, securing 65,520 votes against Dasmunsi’s 40,219.
After her narrow loss in Nandigram by 1,956 votes in 2021, Banerjee was required to win a bypoll to remain Chief Minister. Senior TMC leader Shovandeb Chattopadhyay vacated the Bhabanipur seat, enabling her to contest against BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal.
She returned to the Assembly with a margin of over 58,000 votes and a vote share of nearly 72%, reinforcing Bhabanipur’s status as her strongest political bastion.
In the current election, Banerjee has positioned herself as a defender of Bengali identity against what her party terms “outsider forces” — an apparent reference to the BJP. Her campaign draws on opposition to the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship Amendment Act, both framed by the TMC as critical issues for Bengalis and migrant communities. She has also urged voters to respond to disenfranchisement linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
